Guangzhou (JLC), July 30, 2025--China has lifted a yellow alert for tsunami for the coast of Zhejiang Province and Shanghai based on the latest forecast, the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center said at 2:48 p.m. Wednesday.
The country issued the alert this morning after an earthquake jolted Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula at 7:24 a.m. The tsunami was expected to have disastrous impacts on the coastal areas, including Taiwan, Zhejiang, and Shanghai.
Taiwan, however, was not lifted from the yellow tsunami alert.
China has a four-tier, color-coded warning system for tsunami, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
Typhoon Co-May, the eighth typhoon of this year, made landfall in Zhejiang this morning and in Shanghai this afternoon, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to the regions, according to reports.
Because of the typhoon, ferry services were suspended, many flights were canceled, some trains were stopped, and construction work was halted.
As a safety precaution, Shanghai has relocated about 283,000 people from vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas. Some terminals, such as those in the Yangshan Port, have ceased operation in advance.
