Guangzhou (JLC), September 9, 2026--China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose by 0.8% year on year in August 2026, according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The increase in the month was 0.3 percentage points higher than that in the previous month, which was due to a larger gain in energy prices, according to Dong Lijuan, a chief statistician at the NBS.
The core CPI in the month, excluding food and energy prices, went up by 1.0% year on year, accelerating from a growth of 0.9% in the previous month.
On a month-on-month comparison, the CPI climbed by 0.4% in August, the NBS data shows.
In the first eight months of 2026, the CPI moved up by 0.9% from the same period of 2025.
Meanwhile, China's producer price index (PPI), which measures costs for goods at the factory gate, increased by 3.8% year on year and by 0.4% month on month in August, the NBS data indicates.
In January-August, the PPI swelled by 2.0% from the corresponding period of last year.
