Guangzhou (JLC), November 24, 2023 – China’s passenger mobility and freight volume continued to expand in October, with the national transport network running steadily, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) said at a press conference on November 23.
Higher freight volume and port turnover in October
The country fulfilled an operational freight volume of 4.82 billion mt in October, growing 11.7% year on year, the MoT said.
In breakdown, the freight volume by road grew 12.7% year on year in October, while the volume by railway and waterway rose 4.6% and 11.1% YoY, respectively, according to the MoT. The volume by civil airlines gained 37.7% YoY in the month, it said.
Meanwhile, the parcel volume by courier services reached 12.06 billion units in October, a year-on-year increase of 22%, according to the State Post Bureau.
Higher road freight volume (including parcels) has propped up China’s diesel demand somewhat in October.
In addition, overall port turnover reached 1.49 billion mt in October, growing 8.1% YoY in October. In breakdown, the port turnover for imported goods rose 9% YoY in the month, the ministry said.
This coincided with the import data released earlier this month. The import value of goods (in CNY terms) gained 6.4% YoY to CNY1.57 trillion in October, the NBS data showed.
Stronger passenger flows
Inter-regional passenger flow volume reached 5.34 billion trips in October, a year-on-year increase of 50.2%, the ministry said.
In breakdown, the passenger volume by road grew 44% YoY, while the volume by railway and waterway gained 194.1% and 117.3% YoY respectively, according to the MoT. The passenger volume by domestic airline gained 252% YoY, it said.
More investment in transport infrastructure
Fixed-asset investment in the transportation sector reached CNY3.23 trillion in January-October, rising 4.3% YoY, according to the ministry.
